Because Only Together We Can

Twala Women: Unchaining Traditions. Empowering the Future

Who We Are

Welcome to the Twala Tenebo Cultural Centre. The sound of a bell can change a life, and in 2007, the “Twala” (bell) rang, calling Maasai women to “Tenebo” (come together). Here in the breathtaking landscape of Laikipia, Kenya, over 200 women have harnessed their collective strength to defy tradition, build economic independence, and empower the next generation.

Through our cooperative enterprises in sustainable ecotourism, beadwork, and farming, we are not just earning a living—we are creating a brighter, more equitable future for our families and our community. Welcome to our story—a testament to resilience, purpose, and the power of women coming together for change.

Impact Stories

A visitor said

Visiting the Twala Tenebo Cultural Centre was a highlight of the trip to Kenya. The warmth and generosity of the women were incredible, and the commitment to empowerment and conservation was moving. Sharing stories while learning to make traditional beadwork was a truly special experience. Knowing that the visit directly supported their enterprises and girls’ education made it all the more meaningful. This is more than a cultural tour—it’s an inspiring lesson in resilience and community. It will never be forgotten.

Before Twala, many had no voice in the community. The place was said to be in the home, but more was desired. Joining the cooperative changed everything. It gave the chance to earn income through beadwork and aloe farming. Now, there is money to send children to school, and the husband respects contributions to the family. Twala has not only given financial independence but has also taught how to be a leader and stand up for what is right. Being a Twala woman is a source of pride.
